Day 8, Lose 20 pounds, First Friday Weigh-In!

Lose 20 pounds in 3 monthsHappy Friday! This is the first time I’ve gone a full week without weighing myself. It’s been really hard to not get on the scale every morning. But at the same time, it gives me something to look forward to, the anticipation of good news and an incentive to make sure the number is down instead of up.

It’s been a good week. I’ve done some exercise every day for at least a half-hour, usually walking on my treadmill. I’ve also cut back on my wine, which was hard the first day, and then surprisingly easy afterward. I haven’t missed it as much as I thought I would.

I’ve been trying to eat healthier overall and to eat smaller portions. I’m going to start tracking my actual calories more closely this week, using the free MyFitnessPal app, mostly to see the breakdown of nutrition and also because it’s easy to fool yourself about how much you’ve had. The pinches of this, bites of that, and splashes of oil or dressing, can add up fast. I’ve also tried to increase my water intake during the day. Too often, I would buy a big bottle of water and it would sit on my desk, barely touched…am trying to be better about that.

One trick I’ve tried this week that has helped is to take a quarter to a third of my lunch and set it aside to have as a 3pm snack, which is when I usually get hungry and am tempted to have bad things, candy, chips, etc.

So, to the weigh-in. I hopped on the scale first thing this morning, and the news was good! Today’s weight is 149, which is down four pounds and ushers me  into a new ‘decade’, which is always psychologically a big deal. I’ll really want to celebrate when I enter the 130’s. It’s been years since I’ve hung out there for any length of time.

Yesterday’s meals were two scrambled eggs with a teaspoon of butter. Then went to the gym for a half hour on the elliptical and 31 squats and had an after workout snack of a banana. Lunch was a garden salad with 5 oz grilled chicken and Italian dressing. I saved a little to snack on at 3pm, and then dinner was Asian-style pork patties with lemon grass and lime kaffir leaves and other spices and a salad of raw spinach, carrots, and cabbage with a tahini dressing. It was delicious….but evidently not a great meal for someone with GERD. LOL So, I probably won’t be making that again…..who knew raw veggies could be so hard to digest?  Today will be a very bland day…..to offset that. Eggs for breakfast Baked chicken and Jasmine rice for lunch and dinner most likely.

This weekend brings a retirement party and hopefully catching up on reading and writing. I am half-way through Harlan Coben’s, Fool Me Once, and it’s wonderful! Hope your weekend is a fun one!
